Over the years we’ve heard numerous stories on what 420 means. We’ve heard lots and lots of “urban legend” and most of it is completely untrue.

The real meaning of 420 is related to the harvesting and planting of tobacco crops. The Farmers Almanac recommends planting tobacco seeds ‘two thirds into the fourth month of the Gregorian calendar year’. This is April 20. The late spring planting of tobacco leads to a younger fuller leaf at harvest time. If you plant in March or early April the broadleaf gets too thick or frays on the edges before the early fall harvest. Also later plantings help keep the tobacco slugs at bay (if you plant early the slugs get fed early and by mid summer they are HUGE and eating trails right though a gorgeous North Carolina broadleaf!

I don’t know if you’ve ever had the pleasure to see a tobacco slug, they are long white worms that stick to the stalk of the tobacco plant. They have to be removed by hand – and you have to squeeze their body in the center to make them let go of the leaf. I assure you, it’s completely disgusting…

Early tobacco farmers like Mr. Reynolds learned very quickly that the best time to plant the tobacco seed was just into late spring. If you plant in May you risk immature leaves, if you plant in early April you risk being inundated with bugs.

So April 20 became the standard for planting.

As the years progressed 420 became slang for tobacco. The 420 Herb is the tobacco plant (Tobacco is an Herb). Thus we made a tobacco blend called “420 Herb” and made our phone number 800 420 HERB.

Unfortunately, in recent years 420 has become slang for all smoking in general, and some people even incorrectly associate the term with the smoking of marijuana.

We assure you that 420 is NOT a drug-related term. It is simply slang for the tobacco plant. Uniformed people may misuse the term, but that is only because they don’t understand and appreciate the true meaning of 420. We refuse to allow the misuse of 420 to alter our correct use of the term.
